MassMutual Director - Investment Administration in Boston, Massachusetts

The Opportunity

This role is responsible for the administration of MassMutual’s direct investments that support transactions initiated by MassMutual’s Investment Management Portfolio Management team on behalf of MassMutual’s General Investment Account.

The Team

The Investment Operations team supports the on-boarding and ongoing administration of our direct General Account investments. The portfolio is unique and sometimes complex, which offers candidates exposure to various investment teams and asset classes. The team is agile and works independently, yet collaboratively. All members are held accountable and are encouraged to grow in the role via education and industry participation. To be successful on this team, you must have a strong diligence, be able to multi-task, thrive in a fast-paced work environment, have strong interpersonal skills, and have a continuous improvement mindset.

The Impact

The Director of Investment Administration is a member of the Investment Operations Management team and is accountable for developing and maintaining efficient processes, considering sourcing and automation opportunities when possible; managing and overseeing a team of resources tasked with executing daily production functions; managing the day-to-day operations of our outsourcing providers; and is responsible for the training, coaching and development of the team.

  • Identification of opportunities to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of function delivery

  • Growing and leveraging relationships with internal, external, and cross-functional parties that are critical to the deal execution, funding, and ongoing monitoring of a multi-billion-dollar portfolio of deals initiated by MassMutual’s Portfolio Management team.

The current scope of this relationship management paradigm includes:

  • Separate Account Mandates with a dozen+ unaffiliated asset managers with $35B in AUM that require significant coordination with the unaffiliated asset managers and internal MM stakeholders responsible for ingestion of trade and commitment data

  • 150+ Private Equity limited partnership investments which includes relationships with the General Partner and Hamilton Lane, our third-party investment book of record vendor

  • 300+ Direct Investments totaling $14B in funded commitments, a growing portfolio of Bonds, Loans and Equities that requires organizational skills and close collaboration with the deal Analysts.

  • Support for other strategies, including facilitating funding, onboarding, and ongoing administration for MassMutual Ventures and MassMutual Impact Investing general investment account investments

  • Overseeing a team of direct reports that manage the day-to-day functions that are required to support the MM direct portfolio, including funding capital calls, supporting deal closings, and reporting. Additionally, ensures that production teams meet their production requirements and maintain reporting for service level agreements.

  • Overseeing relationships with sourcing providers (e.g., State Street Bank’s Wall Street Office bank loan administration team, Hamilton Lane, etc.) to ensure that services are provided in accordance with contractual arrangements

  • Creates and promotes a high degree of awareness of risk, risk control measures, and compliance policies and procedures among all staff members.

  • Participates in departmental and Company-wide initiatives and/or process improvement initiatives

The Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in operations management, business, or related field, or equivalent experience

The Ideal Qualifications

  • MBA or an advanced degree

  • Mastery level knowledge of private bonds, loans, and private equity investments

  • 5+ years’ Experience in management, operations, and leadership in the investment industry

  • Effective communication skills, both written and oral

  • Ability to build consensus and relationships among managers, peers, and employees

  • Have a keen sense of risk and control awareness

  • Cultivate an environment that supports diversity, inclusion, and collaboration

  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of all capital markets products, industry trends, regulatory changes, and industry-wide best practices

  • Experience managing a team across multiple locations

  • Ability to identify and drive process improvements in complex, institutional environment

Salary Range: $110,400.00-$144,900.00
