MassMutual Head of Institutional Product and Actuarial, Institutional Solutions in Boston, Massachusetts

The Opportunity

This position leads the product and actuarial functions across the Institutional Solutions markets, setting strategy for ensuring market competitive solutions within profit and risk parameters, along with advanced analysis and actionable insights that drive strategic business delivery. The role is highly-visible within the company and represents a key component of the Institutional Solutions business channel.

The Impact:

  • Lead product development and product management capabilities and results across the Institutional Solutions markets, including Pension Risk Transfer, Funding Agreements, Institutional Insurance, and Stable Value Investments

  • Deliver actuarial, financial, risk management and analytics functionality across the institutional markets and for the overall business

  • Lead product changes and new product offerings including pricing, contracts, filing, risk assessment, and approvals from corporate functions

  • Deliver pricing capabilities, rate setting functionality and applicable underwriting for the institutional markets

  • Perform and participate in experience studies and determination of pricing assumptions

  • Liaison with Investment Management, Enterprise Risk and Barings on GIA management and invested asset needs

  • Influence growth across Institutional product lines by identifying and implementing opportunities for risk-controlled growth

  • Utilize competitive intelligence to enhance profitability, packaging and positioning

  • Conduct analytics, reporting and communication in support of the role responsibilities

  • Comprehensive analysis of relevant risks, capital considerations and business profitability

  • Monitor capital markets and competitive positioning within markets

  • Collaborate and influence with legal, corporate, reinsurance, accounting, treasury, and other enterprise partners to successfully execute transactions and enable institutional business strategy

  • Evaluate and execute on risk and capacity management options (in partnership with business leaders and corporate functions) that promote long-term growth and risk management

  • Drive deep financial and actuarial analysis that leads to actionable insights that further strengthen the profitability and risk profile of Institutional Solutions for both new business and in-force

  • Liaison to Corporate Risk Management, Finance, Actuarial and Valuation functions for the institutional products

  • Represent Institutional Solutions in actuarial and financial enterprise initiatives

  • Lead, motivate and develop a team of diverse and inclusive actuarial talent to achieve business objectives, develop succession pipelines and create a highly effective and inclusive team culture

Qualifications

  • An accomplished professional with a proven track record of strategic and tactical leadership in driving superior business results

  • 12+ years in institutional financial services, with direct leadership experience in actuarial disciplines including pricing and product

  • Demonstrates initiative and sense of urgency; takes ownership and is results-orientated

  • Ability to effectively manage and deliver on multiple concurrent deliverables

  • Comfortable dealing with both complexity and ambiguity, with ability to explore multiple solutions

  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills

  • High degree of financial acumen (actuarial, finance and economics)

  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) required

  • Knowledgeable in relevant products and services, investments, laws and regulations, industry standards and the competitive environment

  • Disciplined approach to strategic initiatives, business projects and day-to-day activities

  • Experience leading business and strategic initiatives in a highly matrixed, collaborative organization

  • Proven ability to develop, lead and manage a diverse team of professionals, both within own team and across organizational boundaries

  • Ability to analyze and comprehend complex information, as well as convey complex materials to senior executives

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written, verbal, presentation)

  • Advanced business degree and/or professional qualifications
