SUMMARY

Reporting to Head of Life Company Tax, who in turn, reports to the Head of Tax. Primary responsibilities include management, preparation, and oversight of the Company’s state tax work, both tax compliance and financial reporting. State tax work includes premium tax, income tax, property tax, sales and use tax, and guaranty fund assessments (excludes payroll related taxes). Financial reporting consists of internal and external statutory and GAAP financial reporting associated with state and local tax. Secondary responsibilities include federal tax work including statutory and GAAP financial reporting.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • State Tax Compliance

  • Responsible for the timely and accurate tax filings throughout the year in accordance with state and local laws and regulations

  • Coordinate and oversee state tax compliance sourced to outside accounting firm

  • Ensure accuracy of and compliance with tax calendar and internal controls

  • Monitor changes in organizational charts, legal entity status, and state tax legislation to ensure appropriate calculation of state taxable income & apportionment and proper tax filings in appropriate jurisdictions

  • Coordinate periodic nexus studies

  • Manage the distribution of state tax compliance and projects to the staff and vendor to meet internal and external deadlines

  • Responsible for the coordination, preparation, and processing of the annual premium tax filings and associated compliance

  • Responsible for the review of internal and external statutory and GAAP financial reporting associated with state and local tax

  • Serve as primary resource for both technical and procedural matters arising from state and local tax filings and associated compliance

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of state tax developments

  • Provide information and support to business areas, including product pricing information

  • Advise on non-routine transactions impacting state filings, including acquisitions and dispositions

  • Manage state and local tax audits

  • Responsibilities will likely expand to include federal tax work once new target operating model is achieved

  • Prepare / Review Premium Tax Accrual for three life insurance companies

  • Review and approve journal entries

  • Review internal and external statutory and GAAP financial reporting associated with the Tax, Licenses & Fees tax accruals

  • Review General Ledger Reconciliations

  • Prepare / review Annual Statement Schedule T

  • Assist with state legislative and regulatory initiatives

  • Coordinate and work with State Government Relations and internal SALT attorney on legislative and regulatory matters

  • Incorporate changes in law to process and procedures

  • Actively participate in industry groups to influence development of rules and outcomes on important issues

  • Assist with state planning initiatives

  • Guaranty Fund compliance

  • Utilize technical knowledge in working on special projects

  • Develop a strong working relationship with internal and external clients, including vendor relationships

  • Identify, implement and maintain new Target Operating Model designed to effectively and efficiently handle work, consistent with CFO talent strategy

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting/Finance

  • 8+ years state tax experience (preferably in an insurance environment)

  • Strong knowledge and experience related to state and local taxation

  • Strong computer skills, including tax compliance software, GL systems and research software

  • Strong time and project management skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to see the “big picture”

  • Ability to identify issues and recommend effective solutions

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated ability in past work history to become a subject matter expert in a one or more areas of taxation

  • Must be eligible to work in the US without sponsorship now or in the future.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years state tax experience (preferably in an insurance environment)

  • CPA or MST highly desirable

  • Previous management experience highly desirable

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Access desirable
